Green Party of Zambia Aims for a Green Revolution in the August 11, 2016 General Elections

Having registered in 2013, the Green Party of Zambia is participating in its inaugural General Election this year 2016 on the 11th of August. Last year January, we participated in the Presidential By-Election, fielding Mr. Peter Sinkamba, the Zambia Greens leader who participated successfully.

The elections mean a lot to the Greens as this is a potential door for a Green Revolution, championing the green agenda far and wide is in our view the best way to foster Sustainable Development, which will equally be enjoyed by generations to come. Being a fairly new party in Zambia, positions of influence are our key focus as with that vantage point we will strengthen the Green voice globally and will be positioned to positively apply systematic change through policy advocacy and implementation at the high tables of decision making, coupled with affirmative action. We intend to focus on the Marginalized groups in these elections vis a vis the Youths and the Women who are sidelined generally in high level decision making cause of mostly financial status. Over 80% of the total population live under the poverty datum line, and the majority youths who make up 2/3 of the vote, are unemployed and have no proper recreation and hence indulge in various vices. Green leadership is proactive leadership and has the potential to turn the fortunes of Zambia through applying green principles and executing green projects. The major challenge we face is support especially financial muscle to facilitate various activities to sell the green agenda vastly even to those who are on the grassroots level.  We as the Zambia Greens are devout to making a difference and contributing to making this country Green, Zambia at present is in an economic crisis with current inflation rate at 23% and a debt to GDP Ratio of 38% with the debt threshold at 40%, We the Greens have a solution that can change this, let us join forces and support this cause and win us some Green seats in the August 11 election, to influence mindset change and ensure a Green Future.

A Zambia Anchored around the Notions of Sustainability, Equal Rights and Ending Abject Poverty

Quantum Leap of the Economy to End Poverty: We envisage a Zambia characterized by quantum leaps in economic growth so that we end abject poverty.

Equitable distribution of our economic and natural resources: We want to see a Zambia where every Zambian meets basic human needs unconditionally.

Sustainability: We cherish a Zambia governed on the basis of Ecological, Economic, Social, and Political sustainability so that present and future generations have full opportunities to develop personally and collectively.

Equal Rights: We treasure to build a Zambia in in which all individuals in our country are provided with equal rights regardless their gender, age, religion, class, ethnic grouping, physical challenge, health, and wealth, political or other beliefs.

Pledge for Structural, Policy, Law and Strategy Reforms

In order to achieve our Vision for Zambia, we pledge to make several structural, policy, law and strategic reforms if our Party is elected into government.

Sustainability - This is really the heart of Green Party thinking. We must consider the welfare of our descendants, for at least seven generations, if we are to be wise stewards of the earth.

Ecological Wisdom - The earth sustains all life forms. Whatever we do to the earth we do to ourselves

Social Justice - The increase in poverty and inequity is unacceptable. All must be able to fulfill their potential regardless of gender, race, citizenship, or sexual identity

Grass Roots Democracy - Every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. We will work to increase public participation at every level by directly including citizens in decision-making processes

Non-Violence - We all know this is a complicated world. There are times when we may be called to arms, but we will maintain that violence is almost always self-defeating, and always the very, very last choice. We must work to end war, and eliminate the root causes of crime.

Community Based Economy - Rather than people being subservient to the economy, the economy should provide for human needs within the natural limits of the earth. Local self-reliance to the greatest practical extent is the best way to achieve this goal

Gender Equality - The ethics of cooperation and understanding must replace the values of domination and control.

Diversity - We celebrate the biological diversity of the earth and the cultural, sexual, and spiritual diversity of the human race, with due respect to local customary laws and values

Decentralization - The people most affected by a problem must have the authority to solve it.  Distant administrations cannot be responsive. Power must be returned to local communities

Local, National and Global Responsibility - Global sustainability and international justice can only be achieved when responsibility is shared at all levels of society.
