Moldovan Greens Declaration on Russian Military Activities in Moldova

DECLARATION REGARDING INTENSIFICATION OF MILITARY ACTIVITIES OF THE OCCUPATIONAL FORCES OF RUSSIAN FEDERATION STATIONED IN THE TRANSDNIESTRIAN REGION OF THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

The Ecological Green Party of the Republic of Moldova expresses its concern and condemns the intensification of military activities of the occupation forces of the Russian Federation, stationed in the Transdniestrian separatist region of the Republic of Moldova, including offensive exercises which involve training of forcing the Nistru River, which is the benchmark of the so-called Security Zone. This provocative behaviour of the Russian forces breaks the institutionalised mechanism of assuring security in the so-called Security zone might generate new tensions within the region. The interdiction of monitoring military activities in the region by the monitors from the Unified Controlling Commission and from the OSCE in accordance with earlier signed protocols show us the intentions of the secessionist forces to tension the situation within the region.

Those activities are creating also premises for insecurity around the military ammunition depot in Cobasna, where are stoked more than 14,000 tons of former Soviet, current Russian old ammunition and chemical weapons. The ammunition and weapons have a significant chance of explosion, or contamination of soil and water, affecting the surroundings.

As Greens, we stand for peace and non-violence in nature and between people. Analysing the difficult situation created with the intensification of military activities in the Security Zone of the Transdniestrian region of the Republic of Moldova the Green Ecological Party Demands

  1. The Government of the Republic of Moldova to adopt a firm position on the issue of military involvement of the Russian Federation and Secessionist authorities within the security zone.

  2. The Government of the Russian Federation to implement international and bilateral treaties and conventions regarding the withdrawal of occupation troop and munitions from the territory of the Republic of Moldova and to permit to monitor the region by the observers from International Organisations (OSCE, EU). We reinforce the provisions contained in the Resolution of the European Green Party on Military Depots in Europe and Moldova, adopted on May 22, 2016.

  3. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the International organisations to urge Russian Federation the immediate evacuation of its occupation forces and munitions from the territory of the Republic of Moldova and to stop supporting secessionist regime of the Transdniestrian Region.
