#MeToo is about empowering women

The social media campaign ‘Me Too’ is about empowering women to feel safe enough to speak out about sexual assault and harassment. Through Social media the campaign has been a really good foundation for women to actually be able to speak out and do so safely.

Year in Review - GGWN 2017 by Merja Kähkönen

This year has been particularly exciting for us, since we were able to meet in person! The Global Greens Women’s Network (GGWN) held two workshops during the Global Greens Congress, held in Liverpool, UK, in March-April 2017. Together with all of the participants, we developed an Activity Plan for the Network.

Global Greens session at the 2017 European Green Party Council in Karlstad, Sweden

From November 23-26th, 2017, the European Green Party (EGP) had its Council meeting in Karlstad, Sweden. There were about 300 participants in this beautiful city and the atmosphere was very good with many talks in the seminars and in the corridors.

Australia's First Aboriginal woman Elected to the Victorian Parliament!

On November 18, 2017, Lidia Thorpe became the first Aboriginal woman ever to be elected to parliament in Victoria. Australia’s newest Green MP for Northcote was elected during recent by-elections, which resulted in a significant swing (11%) from a formerly Labor government.

Nordic Gender Equality Conference (June 20-21, 2017)

Oslo, Norway was the venue for an interesting conference on gender equality policy from a European perspective (June 20-21, 2017) . The conference was organized by the Center for Gender Equality, the Universities of Agder, Aalborg, and Lindköping, and was funded by the NIKK.

Gender equity initiative by Green Parties of the Asia Pacific region

The Asia Pacific Greens Federation Women’s Network (APGFWN) has recently begun a project to increase gender equity in our green parties in the Asia Pacific region. This is a first for our network, and we have set ambitious goals to support women to become Greens party members, to share leadership roles, and to become more skilled and confident in participating in political activities. Levels of women’s participation across the Asia Pacific in politics is varied, and our objective is to see APGF member parties significantly increase in membership levels and in women taking leadership roles in their parties, including as candidates.
