Press freedom in Egypt

The Egyptian Green Party believes that the Global Greens will commit a grave mistake if the press crisis in the Arab region is confined to the issue of the Al-Jazeera Satellite channel journalists. If the only interest is in the release of foreign journalists many negative consequences for press freedom in the region will be ignored.

Global Greens shocked by Egyptian court decision on Al Jazeera English journalists and the assault on press freedom

The Global Greens join the global condemnation of the conviction of the three Al Jazeera journalists accused by Egyptian authorities of ‘falsifying news’ and call on the Egyptian authorities to secure their release urgently. There have been a succession of court rulings in Egypt applying the death penalty, most recently therecommendation by an Egyptian judge to execute 683 Muslim Brotherhood supporters on charges of murdering a police officer and committing violence in Al-Minya province. If implemented this would constitute a macabre world record for mass judicial executions in contravention of international law.

Egypt update: Global Greens urge immediate end of violence and restoration of democracy

The Global Greens utterly condemn the massacre perpetrated by the military against supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, Alexandria and other centres in Egypt on 14 August 2013. The violent dissolution of the sit-ins in Al-Nahda Square and Raba’a al-Adawiyya demonstrates that the military forces in Egypt are not responding to the ongoing social and political crisis in Egypt in a democratic and peaceful manner. We call on the military government to halt the violence immediately and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice in accordance with international law and human rights.
