The death of Prof Wangari Maathai on 25 September 2011 has shocked and saddened the Global Greens. She contributed so much to the world through the Green Belt Movement, through her work promoting women’s rights, and through her tireless campaigns for peace and the environment, especially in Africa.

Global Greens call for Gaddafi’s resignation and an immediate end to the bloody repression in Libya

The Global Greens call in the strongest possible terms for an immediate halt to the bloody crackdown launched by the regime of Colonel Gaddafi and his clan against Libyan protesters. The bombing of unarmed people whose only 'crime' is going to the streets to protest, if confirmed, constitutes a crime against humanity. Similarly, the use of mercenary forces to attack unarmed civilians is a flagrant human rights violation. Colonel Gaddafi should resign.

Climate change – time for transformation

The Global Greens call on the leaders of the world’s industrialised countries at Cancun to reverse the failure of Copenhagen and create the conditions for a strong legally binding global climate agreement to avoid dangerous climate change and facilitate adaptation.

COP 16 at Cancun Mexico, from 29 November to 10 December, is the sixteenth meeting of parties to the UN Framework on Climate Convention since it was negotiated at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Green parties from around a dozen countries will be represented.

Kazumi Inamura receives 54% of the vote to become the first Green mayor elected in Japan

Greens candidate Ms Kazumi Inamura was elected the City Mayor of Amagasaki on Sunday 21 November with an overwhelming 54.3% of the vote. This is the first time in Japan that a Green candidate has been elected to the position of Mayor and the Global Greens congratulate Kazumi Inamura and Greens Japan on this landmark success.

Aged 38 Ms Inamura is reportedly the youngest female city mayor in the history of Japan. She defeated three other candidates to win the mayoralty.

The Global Greens calls on China Government to release Liu Xiaobo and other prisoners of conscience

The Global Greens calls on the government of the People's Republic of China to immediately release the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo and other prisoners of conscience, and take positive measures to further the democratization of China.

Green candidate Marina Silva receives 20% of the vote in Brazilian elections

The extraordinary result obtained in the national elections in Brazil on Sunday the 3rd October by presidential candidate Marina Silva and the Green Party, demonstrates the increasing popularity of Green ideas and proposals in Brazil and around the world. Despite the popularity of outgoing President Lula, the Greens were able to obtain a sensational result and become one of the main political forces in this huge country.

Assassination of Rwandan Greens Vice President Mr Andre Kagwa Rwisereka

The Global Greens express their deep shock and sadness at the murder of Rwandan Greens Vice President Mr Andre Kagwa Rwisereka on 13 July 2010. Mr Rwisereka was a prominent member of the Rwandan Greens who have been systematically blocked from registering as a political party. The assassination of André Kagwa Rwisereka is a tragic event that requires a strong reaction from the Rwandan institutions. The murderers of André Kagwa Rwisereka must be identified and brought to justice.
